MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

Is the situation really irreversible?

At the United Nations Summit on climate last week in New York, 120 heads of state gathered to talk about the same thing: climate change. One conclusion drawn from this summit is the idea that withdrawal from the world economy of fossil fuels is now irreversible. In this line of thinking, you will find in this issue an article about an Ontario plant that burned its last coal reserves and more on changes on the 2015 Canadian Electrical Code. Good reading!

2015 Canadian Electrical Code Changes, Part 2

By Pierre McDonald
Electrical Code Changes In continuing with the theme to provide insight into the changes that will appear in the 2015 Canadian Electrical Code (CE Code), I would like to focus on the addition of rules for the IEC Zone method of area classification for environments containing dusts.

If you recall it was the 1998 CE Code that saw the introduction of the zone area classifications for explosive gas atmospheres. The introduction of Zone 0, Zone 1 and Zone 2 resulted in many questions with respect to markings and how those markings should be interpreted. Read More

OPG Opens North America's Largest 100% Biomass-Fueled Power Plant

Biomass-Fueled Power Generation After a $170 million conversation, Ontario Power Generation's Atikokan Power Plant is now operating on biomass fuel. The project involved modifications to the plant and construction of a fuel storage and handling system to repower the plant from coal to biomass fuel. The generating station, capable of producing 200 MW at full capacity, is located near the Town of Atikokan in northwestern Ontario.

"The conversion of Atikokan will ensure a clean, reliable, sustainable and local supply of electricity for the region," says Bob Chiarelli, Ontario's Minister of Energy. According to Michael Gravelle, MPP, Thunder Bay-Superior North, "This project is not only providing more clean power to Ontarians, it is creating promising new economic opportunities and sustainable jobs for Northwestern Ontario in the green energy and forestry industries."
