MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR

Is Canada greener than its neighbour?

With the opening yesterday of CanWEA 2014 — hosting more than 500 experts from around the world to discuss recent advances and opportunities for Canada's wind energy industry — we present an issue focused on renewable energy. In 2013 alone, another 1,600 MW of wind power came on line. Quebec has experienced the strongest growth in the country, with projects having a total capacity of 1,050 MW, but new facilities are going up from one end of the country to the other. Keep your eyes open. Good reading!

The Next Wave in Architecture: Integrating Photovoltaic Panels into Building Structures

Photovoltaic panels Most of us identify solar power with big panels hooked on to rooftops, but a new generation of sustainable buildings is incorporating the technology into the edifices' structure. "When I started, you had to be a little guerrilla to get things done with photovoltaics," says Anthony Pereira, founder of New York-based altPOWER, who started work in the city in 2001 on one of the U.S.'s first buildings outfitted with building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). Now, the technology is taking off around the globe. Read More

Energy-Efficient Buildings: Look Beyond Construction Costs to Long-Term ROI

Green architecture According to an industry survey by McGraw Hill Construction and the Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC), energy-efficient buildings cost more to make but less to operate. With the life cycle of a typical office building pegged at 40 years, those who go green can expect a return on investment of 400 to 500%.

The report, Canada Green Building Trends: Benefits Driving the New and Retrofit Market, is the first of its kind in Canada. Canada's green building market is vigorous and growing, the report says. Activity is being driven by the market and the benefits that accrue from good sustainable building practices. Read More

Batteries That Store Power in Liquid Form: A Renewable Energy Breakthrough

Flow Batteries Capturing the energy from the wind and the sun is becoming easier, but storing it for a rainy day is another story. This is a problem, as critics of renewables often point out. Wind energy tends to be most abundant at night, when it's needed least. Solar power, by comparison, is most readily available when the sun is bright − but the issue is how to retain that power for later, when industries and communities need it. Read More
