MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR
How do we make informed choices?
I learned last week that very serious people are waiting with anticipation for the economy to collapse. That's what they're calling it: the collapse. More recently, I attended the SCF Quebec section's fall event (maybe you saw my tweets?), and three speakers have presented us with their vision of the future, including economic prospects for 2015. There doesn't appear to be consensus on the prognosis, but none of these speakers saw a looming economic collapse. What to do in the face of these sometimes complimentary, sometimes contradictory, and sometimes just regionally-based visions? Learn, compare and continue. This is the season of training, conferences and symposiums. We note some of them in this issue. Good reading!

Supervisor's Dismissal Upheld for Exposing Workers to Asbestos
An arbitrator has rejected an Ontario Power Generation supervisor's appeal after he was dismissed for safety violations that exposed workers to asbestos. "He was willing to put at risk the health and safety interests of the employees for whom he was responsible, as for those coming on shift after him," the arbitrator noted in his decision.
In October 2009, the supervisor and his crew were removing gaskets from the end doors of a nuclear generator undergoing a maintenance overhaul. The gaskets seal the end doors to keep hydrogen within the generator.
